Task and Reponsibilities:
As Field Doctor:
· Carry out outpatient and inpatient consultations, prescribing the necessary treatment respecting MSF protocols. Apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnose and prevent.
· Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, checking they have understood.
· Follow up the evolution of the hospitalized/IDP patients, through daily visits, consultations, and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment following MSF protocols, deciding whether they can be discharged or transferred to other departments – in collaboration with other doctors - and informing their family about the patient’s evolution.
· Check and control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility and take care of the quality, disinfection, and sterilization of the medical material. Assure general compliance with standing hygiene standards.
· Participate in the analysis of epidemiological data, checking its validity and informing the line manager or project coordinator about any problem or complication of the patient's illness, medical error, and monitoring the functioning of the department, equipment, or material.
· Ensure ongoing training of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team to optimize the quality of care.
· Knows and ensures all MSF medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are always followed, and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control. Ensures professional confidentiality is respected.
As Senior Field Doctor:
· Performs as a clinical consultant for other medical doctors, providing bedside hands-on training when appropriate.
· Functional supervision of the medical doctors in the hospital or outpatient department in their speciality area, providing clinical support. S/he also supervises other technical areas in the absence of corresponding specialists or the Hospital Clinical Lead
· Supervision of the implementation of medical protocols, procedures, and standards used in her/his specialty area, and other areas in the absence of corresponding specialists or Hospital Clinical Lead, ensuring that MSF clinical standards are always adhered to.
· Liaises with technical referents where necessary to ensure delivery of patient care.
· Lead ward rounds and organize clinical sessions.
· Provide technical coordination and inputs under MAM/PMR lead for:
- Referrals of patients following agreed referral protocols in the absence of Hospital Clinical Lead position, and act as technical Focal Point in the Project Health, telemedicine, radiology/POCUS, electronic diagnosis algorithms, and Clinical Operational Research initiatives when appropriate.
· Works in close collaboration with Senior Nurse and/or Nurse Supervisor
· Quality of care: these tasks are to be performed in the absence of a Hospital Clinical Lead and according to the field's needs and activities ongoing. The Senior Field Doctor will be in the best position to perform those, but they could be shared with other team members upon request:
· Performs as Quality-of-Care Focal Point in the project and, in conjunction with the MAM, NAM, and Nurse Lead, ensures the development and implementation of clinical quality improvement plans.
· Oversees the implementation of the medical incident reporting policy and follow-up of all medical incidents.
· Collaborates and supports the ATB focal point in the rational use of antibiotics and takes this role of focal point when pertinent.
· In close collaboration with medical and nursing managers, supports the implementation, monitoring, and analysis of QoC indicators in the project.
· Leads regular clinical review meetings to ensure quality assurance and continuous learning in place and/or (in Hospital set ups) is a core member or chairperson of the in-hospital mortality committee.
· In close collaboration with the laboratory manager and/or lab supervisor, supports the coordination between laboratory and imagery activities and clinical care provision.
Leadership and training:
· Support MAM/PMR in identifying training needs for all medical staff in core competences required for their area of practice in particular the ability to identify and escalate the management of acutely unwell and deteriorating patients.
· Provides on-the-job supportive training, including spot checks and skills demonstration in her/his speciality area.
Monitoring and evaluation:
· Upon request from MAM/PMR, supports that patients' records and clinic registers are completed according to MSF requirements.
· Upon request from MAM/PMR, support in the use of established reporting formats for data collection, analysis, and report on daily & weekly activities to Hospital Clinical Lead as required and follow notifiable disease protocols.
· Supports the Hospital Clinical Lead in doing the HMIS data analysis of different areas.
Other:
· Support that all consultations with patients are in a dignified and appropriate manner in keeping with the Quality-of-Care standards and principles set out by MSF.
· Act as a focal point for patients' and caregivers’ complaints and concerns and escalate as per MSF Patient Charter and Behaviour and Abuse escalation Policy. This task could be either done by MAM or Hospital Clinical Lead when available.
· In close collaboration with Hospital clinical Lead, support the systems in place to maintain patient confidentiality.
MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities:
Clinical Care:
· Deliver quality obstetric and gynaecological care prioritizing critically ill or high-risk patients MSF protocols.
· Lead inpatient and outpatient consultations, ensuring timely, safe, and evidence-based care for all women, including antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and gynaecological patients.
· In Daily ward rounds, providing follow-up care, treatment adjustments, safe discharge planning, or referral to higher-level facilities when needed.
Quality of Care improvement and Safety:
· Ensure adherence to MSF obstetric and gynaecological protocols and newborn care, infection prevention, hygiene standards, and safe surgical practices.
· Conduct clinical audits, maternal and perinatal mortality reviews, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and care outcomes.
· Serve as the departmental focal point for Medical Incident Reporting, rational antibiotic use, safe surgical practices, and obstetric/gynaecological Quality of Care activities.
Leadership and Training:
· Provide on-the-job training, mentorship, and supervision to junior doctors, nurses, midwives, and PGME students, emphasizing evidence-based management of obstetric and gynaecological conditions.
· Together with the PGME trainer(s), support PGME program activities, including bedside teaching, case discussions, surgical skills demonstrations, and simulation exercises to strengthen clinical competencies of trainees.
· Facilitate structured learning sessions, case reviews, and multidisciplinary drills to improve OB/GYN clinical knowledge and practical skills.
· Support staff in managing high workload efficiently, fostering teamwork, resilience, and safe patient care practices in a resource-limited, high-demand environment.
· Act as a clinical role model, demonstrating best practices in patient care, documentation, infection prevention, ethical standards, and respectful maternity care.
· Contribute to review and adoption of clinical protocols to align with the available medical supplies.
Coordination and Collaboration:
· Active participation in definition, planning, implementation, and evaluation of departmental activities.
· Liaise with hospital administration, MSF management, laboratory, pharmacy, and referral centres to ensure smooth OB/GYN care delivery.
· Act as second call/on-call support for the OB/GYN team, providing clinical guidance, decision-making support, and emergency assistance when needed.
· Facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration (including anaesthesiology, paediatrics, and surgery) to address complex obstetric and gynaecological cases and ensure timely interventions.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:
· Ensure accurate documentation of patient records, data collection, and reporting on obstetric and gynaecological health trends and service outcomes.
· Support analysis of workload, patient outcomes, and quality indicators to inform project planning and decision-making.
· Set objectives and conduct regular MDs appraisals and evaluation of MDs in her department, providing feedback on clinical performance, adherence to protocols, and integration into the team.
· Oversee and contribute to the PGME induction program, ensuring new trainees are oriented effectively to the OB/GYN department, MSF protocols, and clinical expectations.
· In collaboration with PGME trainer(s), support continuous assessment and mentorship of PGME trainees to monitor their progress, identify gaps in knowledge or skills, and provide targeted training interventions.
Patient and Community Engagement:
· Ensure care is dignified, culturally sensitive, and in line with MSF Patient Charter standards.
· Act as focal point for patient and caregiver concerns, ensuring appropriate feedback, counselling, and follow-up.
· Flexible to perform additional work-related tasks requested by the Line Manager or Functional
Minimum Requirements and Competencies
Education
Essential:
- Medical Doctor
- Specialisation in obstetrics and gynaecology
Desirable:
- Master’s in public health.
Experience
Essential:
- Senior clinician with at least 4 years’ experience delivering health care in humanitarian settings.
- Field experience is the most important requirement for this role and therefore this will stand instead of formal academic post-specialization qualifications (which will be considered as strong assets)
- Experience of supervising clinical staff in Hospital/in-patient facilities in humanitarian settings (MSF or other NGO’s).
