Provide Specialized Care to Newborns
- Care for premature and critically ill infants, including those with congenital conditions, infections, or surgical complications.
- Monitor vital signs such as heart rate, oxygen levels, and temperature.
Administer Medications and Treatments
- Safely give medications, intravenous fluids, and nutrition as prescribed.
- Operate and manage ventilators, incubators, and other NICU-specific equipment.
Monitor and Document Patient Status
- Conduct frequent assessments of the infant's condition.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date medical records and reports.
Assist with Procedures and Emergencies
- Support physicians during procedures such as intubation, blood draws, or resuscitation.
- Respond quickly to changes in an infant’s condition or medical emergencies.
Communicate with Families
Provide updates, education, and emotional support to parents and guardians.
- Involve families in care plans and discharge education.
Collaborate with Healthcare Team
- Work closely with neonatologists, respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, and other NICU staff.
- Participate in care planning and shift handovers to ensure continuity of care.
Promote Infection Control and Safety
- Follow strict hygiene and infection-control protocols to protect vulnerable infants.
- Ensure proper equipment sterilization and maintenance.
Support Developmental and Emotional Needs
- Encourage practices like kangaroo care and breastfeeding support.
- Monitor infant responses to stimuli and adjust environment as needed.
Participate in Ongoing Training
- Stay updated with neonatal care practices and NICU protocols.
- Attend continuing education and certification programs such as NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program).
NICU Nurse – Requirements
Education
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required.
- BSN is often preferred by hospitals, especially for NICU roles.
- Completion of coursework in pediatrics or neonatal care is a plus.
Licensure
- Must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Pass the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses).
Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required).
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification (required or obtained shortly after hire).
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is sometimes required.
- Certification in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing (RNC-NIC) is preferred or may be required for advanced positions.
Experience:
- Clinical experience in a hospital or pediatric unit is often required.
- 2–3 years of experience in neonatal or pediatric nursing may be required or strongly preferred for Level III or IV NICUs.
Skills and Qualities:

- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- High attention to detail and ability to work in high-pressure situations.
- Compassion and emotional resilience for supporting families in crisis.
- Physical stamina to work long shifts and perform bedside care.
Clinical Experience
- Completion of clinical rotations in pediatrics or neonatal care during nursing school.
- 1–2 years of experience in a pediatric or neonatal unit is often required for higher-level NICU settings (Level III or IV).
