A Lab Service Engineer in a Biomedical Workshop typically has a pretty important and technical role. Their main responsibilities usually include:
- Installation of Equipment
- Setting up new biomedical lab machines like Hematology Analyzers, spectrophotometers, Biochemistry analyzers, Hormone analyzers, Microscopes, etc.
- Making sure the equipment is calibrated and working according to standards.
- Maintenance and Servicing
- Performing routine maintenance to keep machines running smoothly.
- Doing preventive maintenance checks as scheduled (to avoid breakdowns).
- Keeping detailed service logs for each piece of equipment.
- Troubleshooting and Repairs
- Diagnosing technical issues and fixing faulty lab equipment.
- Replacing or repairing parts as needed.
- Making quick decisions on whether equipment can be repaired on-site or needs to be sent to the manufacturer.
- Calibration and Testing
- Calibrating lab instruments so they give accurate readings.
- Verifying that the machines meet performance standards and safety regulations.
- Training Users
- Training lab technicians or hospital staff on how to properly use the equipment.
- Providing basic troubleshooting guidance to users.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Preparing reports on equipment status, repair history, and preventive maintenance.
- Keeping inventory of spare parts and tools.
- Compliance and Safety
- Making sure all equipment meets healthcare safety standards.
- Managing waste or broken equipment properly.
- Upgrades and Recommendations
- Advising on when equipment needs to be upgraded or replaced.
- Recommending new technology or improvements for the lab.
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering or Medical Technology.
- More than 2years of experience in servicing medical laboratory equipment or more than 5 years working in a medical laboratory.
- Hands-on experience with equipment such as centrifuges, hematology analyzers, Biochemistry analyzers, Hormone analyzers and microscopes.
- Strong knowledge of IT systems, basic networking, and lab software integration.
- Familiarity with operating systems (Windows) and troubleshooting software issues related to lab equipment.
- Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and time-management skills.
- Certification in Biomedical Equipment Technology (CBET) or Diploma in electronics is an added advantage.
