duties

  • Drive the project staff and consultants and their official visitors on official trips, in armored/soft skin vehicles in the duty station and other locations inside the country, as required.
  • Meet staff and official visitors at the airport, hotel check-in, pick and drop and other local formalities.
  • Log official trips, daily mileage, fuel consumption, transportation / vehicle related expenditures, vehicle servicing, repairs, etc. and report regularly to Admin/Finance of project on servicing or maintenance needs.
  • Ensure day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle(s); checks oil, water, battery, tires, security equipment etc.; perform minor repairs and timely arrange for any other repairs necessary to always keep the vehicle safe and technically sound; maintain the vehicle(s) in clean conditions.
  • Handle local and organizational formalities when involved in an accident; ensure that in this case all organizational, security and local / country rules, regulations and procedures are followed correctly.
  • Collect and inform the office on security and road conditions, as necessary and ensure safe travel on different sites.
  • Collect/deliver documents, pouch, equipment and cargo, as required.
  • Exercise the utmost care while driving and ensure that safety precautions are taken to observe traffic and UN security regulations, plus be aware of security threats.
  • Ensure that the use of the vehicle is solely and exclusively for office FAO requirements.
  • Ensure that whenever not in use the vehicle shall be parked on FAO premises or on any other UN or Government premises/locations as instructed.
  • The driver shall not leave the vehicle outside the FAO premises without authorization.
  • Planning of routes, in conjunction with the FAO Security Units, ensuring the safety of passengers at all times.
  • Maintain a close liaison with the FAO Security Unit ensuring a detailed knowledge of the safest routes within the region
  • Ensure that the assigned vehicle is fully operational and well-maintained including inventory of all the necessary communication and emergency equipment readily available and tightly secured in their assigned vehicles such as first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, serviceable spare wheel, wheel changing kit, spare keys, torch, spare water, jumper cable & tow rope.
  • Ensure that the assigned vehicles are in good operational conditions: conducting daily checks (oil, fuel, brakes, Wheels, battery, tool kits, etc..) on all assigned vehicles and before the commencement of any trip/mission, and reporting of any defects to the Administration and Transport Section for immediate repairs and maintenance.
  • Keep abreast of tactical operational procedures, emergency and contingency planning of FAO procedures for road movements and participate during team training.
  • Perform as protocol assistants when required.
  • Perform other related duties as required

Minimum Requirements

  • Completion of a High School Diploma or its equivalent commercial/vocational school is required. Formal drivers training with a valid driver’s license/certification to operate assigned vehicle following local rules and regulations.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant work experience with international organizations, or preferably with a UN Organization in a multicultural office environment.
  • Good knowledge (level B) of English and the local languages (Pashto and/or Dari). 
  • National of Afghanistan.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Flawless, safe driving record. 
  • Work performance in the last five years confirms no major accidents and disciplined behaviour.
  • Good knowledge of the local driving rules and regulations; skills in minor vehicle repair.
  • A high degree of punctuality and reliability is required.
  • Safe driving manner. Good sense of direction and knowledge of local conditions.
  • Ability to cope with extended working hours.
  • Previous work experience with the UN is considered a strong asset.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relations with other staff/colleagues from different cultural backgrounds and with relevant counterparts.
